  Saare Jahan Se Achchha

Music has all the power and can do wonders which the science is proving today.

But India the land of music has proved it much earlier that music has the power to change the nature and God also likes good music. Miyan Tansen (popular as Tansen) one of the greatest musicians of the world from India has the power to call for rain through his Raga Megh Malhar, control animals and it is also said that at times when Tansen used to sing in the courts of Akbar the great the candles use to light-up on their own.

During the freedom struggle music became one of the main motivational force bring all the patriots eventually.

Thus is the year 1904 a weekly journal Ittehad printed a poem on 16 August which became Tarana-E-Hind. This song knitted the whole of India in one rosary and still is the most popular song after 107 years. This song is ode to old Hindustan of which Bangladesh, Pakistan and India were on the whole one part. Though this song was written as poem for the children but with the span of time has become the Anthem of the People of Hindustan. The song was sung by the lyricist Allama Mohammad Iqbal at the Government College, Lahore (now part of Pakistan) as Saare Jahan Se Achchha... Iqbal the lecturer at the Government College, Lahore was requested by Lala Har Dayal to preside over the function and instead of delivering a speech Iqbal sung this song. This song was published in Bang-i-dara an Urdu book published in 1924.

This song has not only has elegiac qualities but has made the Hindus and the Muslims to unite in greater extent. This song was sung by Mahatma Gandhi many times when he was imprisoned in the Yerawada Jail in Pune in the 1930s.

Here are the lyrics as a gift on the eve of Independence Day

Translation

Better than the entire world, is our Hindustan,

We are its nightingales, and it (is) our garden abode

If we are in an alien place, the heart remains in the homeland,

Know us to be only there where our heart is.

That tallest mountain, that shade-sharer of the sky,

It (is) our sentry, it (is) our watchman

In its lap frolic those thousands of rivers,

Whose vitality makes our garden the envy of Paradise.

O the flowing waters of the Ganges, do you remember that day

When our caravan first disembarked on your waterfront?

Religion does not teach us to bear ill-will among ourselves

We are of Hind, our homeland is Hindustan.

In a world in which ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome have all vanished without trace

Our own attributes (name and sign) live on today.

Such is our existence that it cannot be erased

Even though, for centuries, the cycle of time has been our enemy.

Iqbal! We have no confidence in this world

What does any one know of our hidden pain?
