Indian in Space

This blog is about the Indian achievement in Space when First Indian landed into Space on 3rd April 1984.

The fever of cricket has taken the Indians. They are busy celebrating the first anniversary of winning the Cricket World Cup (a game not having roots in India), but have forgotten other things of which they should be proud off.
It was exactly 28 ago on 3rd April the first Indian entered space in the joint venture with the then Soviet Union (Russia). It was Sqn Ldr Rakesh Sharma (test pilot of Indian Air Force) who alongwith Soviet cosmonauts Yuri Vasilevich Malyshev and Gennady Makhailavich Sterkalov who stayed in space for 24 hours before docking with Salyut 7 space station for their stay for next seven days. They were carried in Soyuz T II spaceship, launched from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan (USSR-Russia) at 18:38 hours (IST) on 3rd April 1984.
Rakesh Sharma carried the Indian Tricolour, portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Zail Singh (then President of India), Indira Gandhi (then PM of India), then Defence Minister of India Venkataraman, soil from Rajghat, video cassettes of Indian Films, music cassettes of Pt. Ravi Shankar and other Indian music along with him.
We should celebrate this more than any other achievement about rejoicing for only cricket.
